The Issue

I've been a dedicated Kroger fuel center employee for almost a year, standing alongside three resilient coworkers who help keep our operations running smoothly. Among us is our remarkable fuel lead, an 82-year-old woman, who, despite her age, tirelessly manages her duties. Another coworker is nearing his 70s and lives with cerebral palsy, while a third also approaches his 70s with unwavering commitment. I, too, have overcome physical challenges, having undergone spinal fusion surgery.

In light of our circumstances, it is both unjust and inhumane that Kroger has decided to remove chairs from our fuel kiosks, denying us a simple but essential comfort – the ability to sit. Kroger justifies this decision by likening our work to cashiers inside the store, but this comparison fails to acknowledge the unique physical demands and differing needs of fuel center employees.

We urge Kroger to reconsider and return our chairs. Allowing employees to sit when needed is not merely a matter of comfort; it is a necessity for those of us who may struggle with standing for prolonged periods due to age, disability, or past physical trauma.

It is well-known that comfortable working conditions lead to increased productivity and job satisfaction. Happy employees create better customer experiences, enhancing the company's reputation and bottom line. By preventing us from sitting, Kroger is not only compromising employee well-being but also missing an opportunity to foster a more positive and efficient workplace.

Fuel center employees generally deal with outdoor weather conditions, which can be physically taxing and vary from region to region. They deserve the dignity and respect of having their health and comfort considered. Ensuring such basic amenities is a reflection of a company’s values and commitment to its workers.

Kroger, as a renowned organization, has the means and the moral duty to ensure that all employees, regardless of their position, have equitable working environments. Let us come together to encourage Kroger to rethink its policy and demonstrate true corporate responsibility.

Please sign this petition to demand that Kroger reinstates chairs in its fuel centers for the well-being and dignity of its employees.
