Demand Justice: Reform the Judicial System and Implement Strict Penalties for Murderers
The issue
We are calling for urgent reform in New Zealand’s justice system to address its inadequacies in handling violent crimes. This petition arises from a deeply troubling personal experience highlighting the system’s flaws. In April 2023, Jayden Kahi ended the life of a grandfather, an Indian tourist, Mewa Singh—with a single punch outside Linwood Park. Despite pleading guilty to manslaughter, he received a mere 11 months of home detention. This outcome reveals an alarming gap in our justice system, where sentences seem insufficiently severe for the crimes committed. We need harsher penalties to deter potential offenders and to send a clear message: crime will not be tolerated.
Our justice system often appears to minimize the seriousness of violent crimes by issuing lenient sentences, even in cases where lives are lost. This not only denies true justice to the victims and their families but also erodes public confidence in our legal framework. According to research from The Sentencing Project, our current system "has maintained an emphasis on punishment over rehabilitation," but, in reality, this focus has often fallen short, especially for violent crimes. When someone’s life is taken, the punishment must match the gravity of that offense.
Judges should be held accountable for the sentences they deliver, and the state must ensure that violent crimes, such as murder and manslaughter, are treated with due severity. Home detention for taking a life is a disservice to the value of human life and undermines public trust in our justice institutions. Individuals who take the lives of others should not be granted the comfort of serving their sentence at home; they should face strict incarceration that reflects the seriousness of their actions.
We urge all New Zealanders to demand a justice system that values human life and ensures that violent offenders receive sentences commensurate with their crimes. Please support this petition to bring about necessary reforms to make our justice system robust, accountable, and truly just. Your signature can help drive the changes needed for a safer New Zealand.
