The Issue

Willie Jr Simmons, a resident of Alabama, has been unjustly serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for a mere $9 robbery. This punishment is not only disproportionate to the crime but also highlights the inequities within our criminal justice system. Our society stands on the premise of fairness and rehabilitation, not on the destruction of life for a minor mistake committed decades ago.

In 1982, Willie Jr Simmons was tried under Alabama's habitual offender laws, which drastically increased his sentence due to prior offenses during a period in which he struggled with addiction. This draconian ruling has left him incarcerated at Holman Correctional Facility for over 40 years. To this day, Willie demonstrates remorse and transformation, yet remains trapped inside cell walls for a crime that, even at the time, did not warrant such a severe penalty.

Willie's story is not just his own but echoes the experiences of many others who have been disproportionately affected by harsh sentencing laws. Studies from The Sentencing Project have shown that as of 2022, over 45,000 people in the U.S. are serving life sentences without parole for nonviolent offenses—highlighting a systemic issue within the judiciary. This staggering number represents thousands of families broken and futures dimmed under the guise of justice.

There is hope. By reevaluating the cases of individuals like Willie, we can foster a more equitable and forgiving society. Clemency and sentence reform are essential to rectify the errors of outdated judicial practices and align with a more humane and progressive justice system.

We urge the Governor of Alabama and the State Board of Pardons and Paroles to review Willie Jr Simmons' case for clemency. He has served more than enough time for his crime and deserves a chance to contribute positively to society outside of prison walls—something he has voiced his deep desire to do.

Please, join us in this fight for fairness and justice. Sign this petition to support Willie Jr Simmons' release and amplify our call for necessary reform in our criminal justice system. Together, we can ignite change and bring hope where there is none.
