The Issue

As a passionate animal lover and advocate, my heart is shattered by the tragedy that occurred today in Erie County. Andrew Jackson, a member of the Erie County Sheriff's department, fatally shot a gentle Great Dane inside the very home of its loving family. This tragic event unfolded due to a monumental error—Andrew arrived at the wrong house. The innocent dog, in its friendly nature, jumped up to greet him. Instead of exercising the many non-lethal options available to him, such as a Taser, Andrew chose to discharge his firearm, ending the life of a non-threatening and beloved family pet.

What exacerbates this heartbreaking scenario is that the shooting took place in front of the owners and their young children, leaving a family traumatized and questioning the safety of their own home. This wasn't just an attack on their beloved pet; it was an attack on the place they call home, a place meant to be safe and secure.

I strongly believe this display of excessive force is unacceptable, particularly from someone who is supposed to protect and serve the community. The choices made by Andrew Jackson on this day show a severe lack of judgment and restraint, demonstrating that he is not fit to continue serving in this capacity. A civil servant's duty is to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of our community, including our beloved pets.

The time is now to take a stand for justice and to protect the rights of both families and their pets. I urge Erie County officials to conduct a thorough investigation and relieve Andrew Jackson of his duties immediately. Protecting innocent lives, be they human or animal, should always be a priority in our community.

Please join me in demanding justice for this innocent Great Dane and its devastated family. Let your voice be heard by signing this petition, and let's ensure that this never happens again. Together, we can bring about change and restore a sense of safety and justice in our community. Sign this petition to demand accountability and justice.
