Iryna Zarutska reminds me so much of my own sister. The pictures and videos of her brutal murder haunt me. If it happened to her, it could happen to my sister, your sister, or any woman we know. I am driven by the need for justice, not only for Iryna but for every woman who has suffered such a tragic fate. If it ever happened to a loved one, I would want nothing but justice for them, and that's why I am determined to fight for justice for Iryna. 


On that grim day, we were reminded of the pure evil that still exists in this world. DeCarlos Brown Jr has been accused of killing Iryna, a Ukrainian refugee who fled her homeland seeking safety and peace only to tragically lose her life thinking she was in a place where she was safe from the death and destruction of war. She died alone on that train with people that didn’t even look in her direction. This case has shaken  communities across the country. It’s a stark reminder that even in places we believe to be safe, violence can find its way in, robbing innocent people of their right to live without fear.


Shockingly, DeCarlos Brown Jr. was just ruled "incapable to proceed” on his state murder charges. If he was capable enough to be previously arrested FOURTEEN TIMES for crimes including armed robbery, assault, shoplifting, and making threats, then he is more than capable enough to stand trial. While we wait months for DeCarlos Brown to be reevaluated in state court, he is still facing federal murder charges. There is still time for justice. 


This is a plea to the justice system, to the jurors, and to all legal authorities overseeing this case: let us ensure that the evil that took Iryna’s life does not go unpunished. DeCarlos Brown Jr must be held accountable for his heinous actions, and we believe the death penalty is the just consequence for his crime.

We must show that we will not stand idly by while such atrocities occur. Statistics show that refugees, already vulnerable, are often more susceptible to violence and crime. Iryna’s tragic death underscores the urgent need for stronger protections and support for refugee communities. Her story has touched many lives, resonating deeply with families and communities across the world. Her life mattered.
