This summer, Chico police responded to a 2:15 a.m. welfare check in the 600 block of West 9th Street and found the husky already dead on the garage floor.

The dog was severely underweight and had been lying in its own waste.

Investigators believe it suffocated while trying to reach food it could not get to. The dog had lived with its owner, 26-year-old Arial Magana, for about a year with no reported health problems before this happened.

Magana was arrested and booked into Butte County Jail on a violation of animal cruelty. For animal lovers, a case like this is gutting: a healthy dog wasted away in a locked garage, and no one stepped in until it was too late. A conviction that treats this as a minor offense sends the message that starving an animal to death carries little real consequence.

This is not an isolated incident. In July, a Chico woman was jailed on a felony charge after her own husky died under similar circumstances of alleged intentional cruelty. Two dogs are dead in two months, and Chico animal lovers deserve to know the justice system will hold owners accountable when neglect turns fatal.
