Three residents of Cornell Township, Michigan, are facing serious charges after investigators say they left dozens of animals to suffer.

In February, Michigan State Police searched a property in Delta County and found several dead cats, rabbits, pigs, and goats. Fourteen more cats, twelve rabbits, and a sheep were found alive, though thin and clearly neglected.

The suspects have each been charged with a felony count of cruelty to 25 or more animals, along with eight misdemeanor counts of animal neglect. They were arraigned in 94th District Court in Escanaba, and bond was set at $10,000 for each defendant. Their next hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20.

If convicted, the felony charge alone carries up to seven years in prison. But charges only matter if they lead to real consequences.

Animals cannot speak for themselves, and cases like this too often end in light penalties that do little to stop repeat abuse.

The Delta County Prosecutor and the presiding judge have the power to pursue the full weight of the law here. These animals suffered for months before anyone stepped in. They deserve an outcome that reflects the severity of what was done to them.
