The Issue

Between January 2025 and spring 2026, more than 900 animals were transferred to Miranda's Rescue, an animal rescue organization operating out of Fortuna, California. Of those, only 116 were confirmed adopted. The other 731 animals are unaccounted for.

On June 23, 2026, investigators from the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, the California Attorney General's Office, the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture executed a second search warrant at the property. Using ground-penetrating radar to locate potential burial sites, they uncovered the remains of at least one horse and one additional animal. The investigation — which began in April 2026 — spans animal cruelty, fraud, and theft charges. No arrests have been made.

This is not a paperwork error. Seven hundred thirty-one animals came through that organization and cannot be accounted for. Buried remains are being excavated from the property. And the people who surrendered those animals — trusting they would be cared for — deserve to know what happened to them.

We are calling on the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office and the California Attorney General's Office to pursue the full range of criminal charges in this case. The scale of this investigation demands accountability that matches it.

Sign this petition to demand full prosecution and answers for every animal lost at Miranda's Rescue.
