Demand Justice for Megan Trussell: Reinvestigate Botched BSCO Investigation | Boulder, CO
The Issue
We have an important update and a new direction for our efforts to find justice for Megan.
-------------------------------------
Megan Trussell was so much more than a student at CU Boulder; she was a vibrant soul, a cherished daughter, sister, granddaughter, cousin, niece, friend, and classmate whose spirit touched everyone she encountered. With a deep passion for film and music, Megan was on her way to becoming a filmmaker, dreaming of traveling the world and immersing herself in diverse cultures.
Tragically, Megan's journey was cut short, and the handling of her case by the Boulder County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) has left us with many unanswered questions. The initial investigation was marred by errors and oversights, failing to thoroughly explore all potential leads and evidence that could bring clarity and justice. This wasn't just a minor slip-up; it was a mishandling that calls for a renewed, diligent, and transparent investigation.
The pain felt by Megan's loved ones fuels our determination to seek answers and accountability. We believe that reopening Megan Trussell's case and having the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conduct a fresh, comprehensive examination and a deeper look into the original investigation done by BCSO is crucial. The community, her family, and friends all agree that a reinvestigation is vital to ensure every avenue is explored with the seriousness it deserves.
**UPDATE:**
We’ve been informed by Jeffery Riester, Director of Legislative Affairs & Sr. Assistant Attorney General, that the Attorney General’s office does not have the legal authority to investigate Megan’s case. The Boulder County District Attorney, Michael Dougherty, and the Boulder County Sheriff, Curtis Johnson have both also refused to reopen or re-examine her case.
Because of this, we are shifting the focus of this petition. We are now calling on Governor Jared Polis to take action. As Governor, he oversees the Department of Public Safety, which directs the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). We are urging him to have the CBI step in and review the mishandled investigation conducted by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office into Megan’s death.
We also want to sincerely thank Senator Janice Marchman for her continued support throughout this process and for standing with us in the fight for justice for Megan.
Your support is more important than ever, please continue sharing and signing so that Megan’s case gets the justice it deserves.
