Demand Justice for Makuna, the Elephant Slain in Chitwan National Park

The Issue

As an impassioned advocate for animals, the gut-wrenching incident of Makuna, the resident male elephant being taken down by security forces in Chitwan National Park, Nepal deeply saddens and angers me. Innocent lives like Makuna's are invaluable and plays a vital role in maintaining the biodiversity of our natural spaces. Makuna, who was a symbol of the park's thriving wildlife, is now a heartbreaking example of the tragedies unfairly thrust upon our non-human brethren.

Elephants are a vulnerable species, with their global population witnessing a sharp decline of 62% over the last decade (WWF, 2021). In Nepal, steps were made to conserve them and a healthy upsurge was noted. However, unfortunate incidents like these could have far-reaching negative impacts on this trend.

The security forces who shot down Makuna need to be held accountable for their actions, and strict laws must be enforced to combat such instances in the future. It's necessary to ensure that the park authorities, as well as the government, recognize the gravity of this issue and take proper actions for preservation and protection of the wildlife in Chitwan National Park.

Please join me in seeking justice for Makuna and change for all wildlife who risk similar unnecessary endings. Sign this petition and urge authorities to take necessary actions to prevent such incidences in the future. Let's stand together to protect the delicate flora and fauna of Nepal.
