Demand Justice for Lion, the Dog Hung by Owner
The Issue
On June 28th, 2025, a grievous incident occurred in Vredendal, Western Cape, South Africa, when a dog named Lion was brutally hung from a tree by his owner. This act of cruelty has shocked the local community and animal lovers worldwide, compelling us to demand justice for Lion and ensure that such heinous acts do not go unpunished.
The Angel Project Matzikama NPC together with other animal rescue organisations in Matzikama, is compelled to speak up for those that cannot speak for themselves.
The accused has appeared five times in the Vredendal Magistrates court in July 2025, on the fifth appearance, on the 28th of July 2025, the accused was granted bail of R500.
The trial of the accused will begin on the 16th of September 2025.
In South Africa, the maximum sentence for animal cruelty, as defined by the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, can be a fine or imprisonment for up to one year. We are calling for imprisonment of one year and we are asking the court that the accused be declared unfit of ownership of any animals in the future.
Animal cruelty is a serious issue that reflects on the moral fabric of our society. According to the World Animal Protection Organisation, millions of animals suffer abuse at the hands of humans every year. In South Africa, despite laws protecting animals, reports of abuse and neglect are still prevalent. The case of Lion is not just an isolated incident but part of a broader issue that demands urgent attention and action.
Punishing the perpetrator and taking firm legal action will not only serve justice for Lion but will also send a strong message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.
Please add your signature to this petition and stand with us in demanding justice for Lion. Together, we can ensure that his horrendous act of cruelty helps to bring about stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws and prevention of further acts of cruelty.
