On December 29, 2024, Jojo, an innocent community dog of Gangotri Apartment, Alaknanda, was brutally beaten with a rod in an act of unthinkable cruelty. The perpetrator, a security guard, cornered Jojo in a room, leaving no chance for him to escape, and subjected him to a merciless beating that ultimately led to his death.

What was more appalling was that this horrifying act had the silent and tacit support of the RWA (Residents’ Welfare Association). In fact, it has come to our knowledge that this atrocious act was deliberate and had been committed at the behest of the RWA of Gangotri Apartment. This is clearly evident from the fact that the guard could not have indulged in such conduct without the green signal from the RWA, the connivance between the two ie.

The RWA and their employee (their guard) is writ large on the face of this horrendous incident, in as much as the RWA has refused to take any action against the guard. The RWA instead has come in his support and even tried to influence the complainant to withdraw the complaint.

Much as we want this world to be a better place, we cannot even take one baby step towards this goal, if we do not believe in the dignity of every living being on this Earth, especially the voiceless creatures who are weak, vulnerable and cannot express themselves.

Till today no action has been taken.

Caregivers of Jojo courageously filed a police complaint on January 2, 2025, but without community accountability and action, justice for Jojo remains elusive.

This is not just about Jojo; this is about standing against the normalization of cruelty towards animals and ensuring that such heinous acts are never repeated. When those in positions of authority or responsibility condone such acts, they fail the community and its values.

We demand the following:

1. Immediate action and investigation into Jojo's death.
2. Legal consequences for the security guard responsible for this inhumane act.
3. Accountability from the RWA for failing to act and their complicity in this matter.
4. Implementation of measures to prevent animal cruelty in Gangotri Apartment, including sensitization programs and policies for animal protection.
