The Issue

On June 17th, 2023, a disastrous head-on car collision changed lives forever in our community. The tragic crash claimed the lives of three precious individuals, including my beloved daughter, Havana Lopez, who was just 17 years old. Havana was riding as a passenger in the car alongside her friend when their lives were cut short by a reckless act.

This crash didn't just take Havana from us; it shattered a family. Also lost were his own sister and a niece just six years old. The aftermath was further compounded when his brother Cameron was violently ejected from the truck, suffering severe injuries, along with another niece of only four years old. This heart-wrenching incident turned the lives of the victims' families upside down, leaving a void that no sentence can fill.

As Havana's mother, I carry the pain and burden of knowing that my daughter was robbed of celebrating her 18th birthday on June 22nd and never saw the graduation she so looked forward to on June 23rd.

Despite the devastating nature of this tragedy, accountability seemed to slip through the judicial cracks, with the driver responsible only receiving a few months in county jail and a mere five years of probation. This outcome does not equate to justice served, nor does it reflect the gravity of the loss experienced by our families and community.

The purpose of this petition is to demand a reevaluation of this sentencing and other sentencing in cases of reckless driving without a license resulting in severe injury or fatalities. He pled guilty to Manslaughter 2nd. While there were 3 deaths. He pled guilty to killing his sister Dahlia Klink and my daughter Havana Lopez however there was no justice for Molly Kibler the 6yr old who was also pronounced dead at the scene. We believe stronger deterrents are necessary to prevent such avoidable tragedies. Sentencing needs to be reformed to truly reflect the severity of the incident and its impact on the victims' families. We propose the introduction of a minimum mandatory sentence for the charges of manslaughter 2nd and reckless driving incidents without a license that cause fatalities and grievous injuries. This would entail stricter penalties that more accurately correspond to the loss inflicted upon affected families.

We implore the judicial system to reassess current protocols and take steps towards implementing meaningful changes that honor the memory of those lost, and prevent others from experiencing such heartache.

Please join us in our quest for justice by signing this petition. Let us ensure that Havana and the other victims find the justice they deserve, and that her memory serves as a beacon of change for a safer future on our roads. Your support will be invaluable in bringing this critical matter to the attention of policymakers and the community at large. Together, we can advocate for a more just and safe society.
