Demand Justice for Emma Filback, Autistic School Girl Assaulted on Bus
The Issue
Emma Filback, a 14-year-old autistic child, endured a brutal assault by a fellow student on her school bus using a tumbler, with no subsequent action taken by either the school or law enforcement. The assailant shamelessly posted a photo of the distorted tumbler she used in the attack on social media, seemingly proud of her actions. It’s now been almost a year and justice remains elusive for Emma and her family. The attacker walks free with no repercussions whatsoever, while the bus driver who failed to protect a vulnerable child still has his job, demonstrating a gross failure in the system and a lamentable lack of empathy. Although I am not personally connected to Emma or her family, the blatant disregard for this girl's safety and dignity is heart-wrenching and unconscionable.
In the United States, almost 1 in 6 children between the ages of 2 to 8 years (17.4%) have a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder such as autism. Children like Emma deserve the same safety, dignity, and respect as all others. The lack of action that has followed her case sends a dangerous message to other potential bullies and failings of staff in positions of responsibility. If we do not hold individuals accountable and enact systemic change, we risk making our children feel unsafe and neglected.
Emma's case must be the catalyst for fundamental changes in how cases of bullying against children, especially those with disabilities, are handled. We implore that the authorities take immediate and robust action against the girl behind the assault as well as all adults who failed to protect Emma, enabling this act of cruelty. We must not let another day pass without justice for Emma. This matter is urgent. Emma deserves to feel safe and know that she is not alone. Don't let her continue to grow up thinking the world won't come to her aid. Let your signature be an outcry against this grave injustice. Let's ensure that Emma receives the justice she deserves and the young girl who assaulted her is held accountable for her brutal actions. This is our collective responsibility. Please, sign the petition.
