Demand justice for Camp Lejeune water poisoning victims
The Issue
In the heart of North Carolina, Camp Lejeune stands as a testament to military strength and resilience. Yet, beneath its proud legacy, a hidden tragedy unfolded, affecting the lives of thousands of families, including mine. My experience as a spouse of a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune was marked by exposure to something we all deserve to have: safe, uncontaminated water. For years, we drank, cooked, and bathed with water we trusted to be safe, unbeknownst to us it was poisoned with harmful chemicals.
I have suffered through not one, but three different types of cancer and continuous skin conditions. Every day, I live with the anxiety of what other health issues may arise. What pains me the most is knowing that those in charge were aware of the contamination that ravaged our bodies and lives. The toxins, including trichloroethylene, vinyl chloride, and benzene, were dumped into our water supply, lingering long enough to cause irreversible damage.
Studies found that from the early 1950s through the late 1980s, these chemicals infiltrated the wells supplying the entire base. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) reported that tens of thousands of Marines and their families have been affected by this tragic oversight. Despite the havoc it wreaked upon countless lives, justice has been elusive for many victims.
Our aim is straightforward: to secure proper acknowledgement of this injustice, ensure comprehensive medical support for every affected individual, and to establish strict new regulations to prevent any recurrence. We demand that Camp Lejeune victims receive the health care, compensation, and apology that is rightfully due. Furthermore, we call for a thorough investigation into the governmental oversight allowing such exposure and a stringent policy to protect military families.
Our servicemen and women vow to protect our country, and in doing so, they deserve to have their own safety uncompromised, as do their families. By signing this petition, you're supporting a call for accountability, for health and safety, and for the dignity of every life disrupted by this environmental failure. Join our plea for justice and ensure no other military base community endures the pain we continue to face. Sign this petition to bring this issue into the light and force a change for good.
