The Issue

Our hearts ache as we recall the tragic event that led to the sudden and unjust death of Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old student whose life was senselessly taken away. Karmelo Anthony, also 17, carrying a knife and without any provocation, committed the heinous act of brutality at a school event. This shocking incident occurred at a track meet, where Austin was stabbed directly in the heart. As a result, a promising life was cut short and we lost Austin forever.

Unfortunately, the shock and despair have been intensified by a recent court ruling. Instead of facing the strict consequences that should follow such a crime, Karmelo Anthony has been released from prison pending trial after a substantial bail reduction from 1 million to 250,000 dollars. This decision was made by Judge Angela Tucker.

The disparity between the initial bail amount and the lowered bail has raised numerous questions. This petition is not about race nor an attempt to incite racial tension. Rather, it aims to question the fairest form of justice for all, irrespective of background, ethnicity, or personal identity. The anguish and rage we feel are directed towards the imbalanced legal system that allowed for this shocking bail reduction.

In 2020 alone, murder perpetrators in U.S. were held in custody without bail in 64% of cases. And yet, Karmelo Anthony walks free despite the gravity of the charges he faces. Let us not forget that at the core of this matter is a loss of a young life due to an act of senseless violence.

This call for justice for Austin Metcalf is a plea for fairness and equality in the legal system. We seek a thorough review of this case and an explanation for the drastic bail reduction. It is also an urgent appeal to ensure that punishment aligns with the gravity of the crime committed irrespective of the offender's identity.

This is a call to uphold justice, a cry demanding accountability and recognition that Austin Metcalf deserves. Please, sign the petition. Let our collective voice shout loud enough for Austin to hear it in heaven. He must know, his life matters.
