Thirty-seven animals, 32 dogs and five cats, were pulled out of a home in Houma, Louisiana last week where they had been living in filth for months. Animal control officers first visited the property in August and noticed a strong smell of urine and ammonia coming from inside. When they returned, testing showed the home's ammonia level had reached 35.5 parts per million, far above what's considered safe to breathe. Dogs inside were found with hair loss, overgrown nails, and untreated injuries. One dog is still missing.

Sheriff Tim Soignet called it one of the hardest kinds of cases his department handles, saying, "Animal Control personnel were required to enter heartbreaking conditions, carefully remove each animal and begin the demanding process of securing the medical care they desperately need," according to WWL Louisiana.

James and Nancy Verrett, the homeowners, were each booked on 33 counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. Both have already been released on bond, and it's now up to prosecutors and the courts to decide what accountability actually looks like.

These animals didn't choose to live like this, and they can't speak up for themselves. The rescued dogs and cats deserve full medical treatment and a real path to safe, loving homes. And the people responsible for their suffering deserve consequences that match the scale of the neglect, not a quiet plea deal that lets this slide.
