The Issue

The Town of Red Springs is facing a period of significant uncertainty and concern following a series of decisions that have left many residents questioning the direction of our community. Among the most troubling developments is the departure of Chief of Police Antoinette Hurtt, whose leadership was widely recognized for strengthening community engagement, increasing transparency, and rebuilding trust between law enforcement and the citizens of Red Springs.

During her tenure, Chief Hurtt worked to foster positive relationships throughout the community, emphasizing communication, accountability, and collaboration. Many residents viewed her efforts as a meaningful step toward restoring confidence in local government and public safety. Her departure has generated considerable concern among citizens who fear that the progress achieved under her leadership may be lost.

At the same time, residents have expressed growing concerns regarding the overall governance of the Town. Public discussions and allegations circulating within the community and online have raised questions about decision-making processes, transparency, and ethical conduct among town leadership. While such concerns must be addressed through facts rather than speculation, the existence of these concerns alone demonstrates the need for independent review and greater public accountability.

Many citizens are also troubled by what they perceive as an excessive concentration of administrative authority within the office of the Town Manager. Decisions affecting public safety, community services, and municipal operations appear to be occurring with limited public input and oversight. This perception has contributed to declining public confidence and has intensified calls for greater checks and balances within local government.

The instability in town leadership further highlights these concerns. The Town has experienced multiple changes in police leadership over the past several years, creating uncertainty within the Police Department and the community it serves. Additionally, recent actions affecting community organizations and services have fueled fears that Red Springs is moving further away from the collaborative approach residents expect from their local government.

The citizens of Red Springs deserve transparent, accountable, and responsive leadership that places the interests of the community above all else. To help restore public trust and ensure confidence in local government, we respectfully call upon the Town of Red Springs and the appropriate authorities within the State of North Carolina to take the following actions:

1. Conduct an Independent Review of the Circumstances Surrounding Chief Hurtt’s Departure

Residents deserve a clear understanding of the events and decisions that led to the loss of a police chief who had earned substantial support through her commitment to community-oriented policing and public engagement.

2. Request an Independent Investigation Into Publicly Raised Concerns

Any allegations or concerns regarding ethical misconduct by elected or appointed officials should be reviewed by the appropriate state authorities to determine the facts and provide transparency to the public. An independent review would help restore confidence and ensure accountability regardless of the outcome.

3. Review Municipal Governance and Administrative Oversight

State and local leaders should examine whether current governance structures provide sufficient oversight and accountability regarding administrative authority, ensuring that decisions affecting the community are transparent, balanced, and in the public interest.

The people of Red Springs deserve a government that is open, accountable, and committed to serving its citizens. Public trust is the foundation of effective leadership, and once that trust is damaged, it can only be restored through transparency, honesty, and meaningful action.

We encourage all residents who believe in accountable government, ethical leadership, and a stronger future for Red Springs to support this effort. By standing together and making our voices heard, we can advocate for the transparency, stability, and community-focused leadership that Red Springs deserves.

Together, we can help ensure a stronger and more promising future for our town.
