As someone who deeply cares for and loves our feline companions, I am heartbroken and disturbed by the mistreatment of a vulnerable kitten by Riley Upchurch and the subsequent inaction by law enforcement. I have 14 adult cats and 10 kittens under my care, all strays who have been given a second chance at life. Hence, it hits close to home when I heard about the painful end to a kitten's life caused by Upchurch's reprehensible actions.

Despite clear indications of abuse, the local police department has failed to properly inform not only the owner of the kitten but the citizens as well.  failing to conduct a thorough investigation or process the compelling evidence presented. They have not sought a search warrant for Upchurch’s home and phone records, arguing that it is not a 'human matter' and thus beyond their jurisdiction.

Our beloved animals deserve justice, and cases of animal abuse should not go unpunished. This case brings to light the urgent need for more stringent animal welfare laws and better enforcement of them. Approximately 28 states in the US classify certain types of animal abuse as felonies, but it's clear that more needs to be done to prevent such acts of violence (ASPCA, 2020).
