The Issue

In Jonesboro, Georgia, a Clayton County family is grieving after their beloved two-year-old rottweiler, Rocco, was shot and killed by a police officer who also happened to be their neighbor. The incident unfolded on Millstone Drive on August 14, when the officer drew his weapon on Rocco in full view of neighbors and family. The Senegals, who owned Rocco, are heartbroken—and they say it didn’t have to happen.

Police claim Rocco was chasing a child and became aggressive, prompting the officer to pepper-spray him and then fire a single fatal shot. But the family and neighbors tell a different story. They say Rocco was not aggressive, only confused and frightened after being sprayed. Video shared with local news shows the officer standing with his gun drawn on the dog for minutes before pulling the trigger. Neighbors even tried to call Rocco home, but instead of de-escalating, the officer chose lethal force.

What makes this even more devastating is that the officer lives in the same neighborhood and knew Rocco well. He had seen the dog out walking with the family many times. According to the Senegals, he knew Rocco wasn’t a threat. Yet in a moment when training and compassion should have prevailed, the officer killed a family pet and shattered community trust.

This is not just about one dog. It is about accountability, responsibility, and the right of families to feel safe from those sworn to protect them. Time and again, across the country, beloved pets are killed in preventable police shootings. These incidents cause immense trauma, and they erode faith in law enforcement.

Clayton County Police must remove this officer from duty, fully investigate the incident with transparency, and adopt stronger policies to prevent needless shootings of animals. Families deserve officers who can de-escalate, who see pets as lives that matter—not targets to be eliminated.

Rocco’s death cannot be undone, but justice can be demanded. Sign if you believe Clayton County must hold this officer accountable and ensure no family ever suffers a loss like this again.
