I am currently dealing with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), and I am facing a real issue. My attorney informed me that DCFS can populate my service plan with any requirements they choose, and I am compelled to comply, despite the absence of judicial oversight. I am mandated to attend Domestic Violence classes, despite my complete absence of history in such matters. I also must submit to random drug tests, although no charges concerning drugs have ever been brought against me. This happens because DCFS' service plans lack checks and balances.

This urgent issue reaches beyond my personal circumstances. In fact, it forms part of a larger pattern of a lack of transparency and accountability within our system. DCFS has immense power in shaping the service plans of families in need. These plans can become overwhelmingly large, encompassing requirements and classes that may be entirely unnecessary or inappropriate for the individuals involved.

Evidence indicates that a lack of clear checks and balances within DCFS and other such governmental agencies can lead to major consequences for those involved. According to a 2015 report by the National Coalition for Child Protection Reform, inaccurate and overfilled service plans can result in families being unnecessarily separated and children being unjustly removed from their parents' care.

We urgently call for changes in this system. We demand that every DCFS service plan receive judicial approval before it is enacted. By requiring a judge to review and sign off on each plan, we will ensure that the best interests and rights of the individuals and families involved are protected.
