This is a personal plea. My husband has been wrongfully incarcerated and alarmingly, subjected to brutal treatment by the authoritative figures behind the prison walls. Beyond my family's heartbreak, sings a cautionary tale of systemic brutality and flawed justice.
American prisons house over 2.3 million individuals, with certain studies suggesting nearly 20,000 of which might be wrongfully convicted (National Registry of Exonerations). The graver issue lies in the unjust physical abuse prisoners are subjected to, with an estimated 4% of inmates reporting sexual violence and numerous undocumented instances of physical aggression (Bureau of Justice Statistics).
The fight here isn't just about my husband, it is about every innocent citizen forced to bear the burden of a crime they did not commit and then further dehumanized by those appointed as their custodians. It is a call to bring an end to a failing system that stains our ideals of justice, and gravely violates human rights.
I urge you to take a stand. Demand swift and comprehensive investigations into prisoner abuse and wrongful convictions. Demand that the perpetrators of these violent actions are held accountable. Change begins here, it begins with you. Please sign this petition.
