The Issue

My husband, a resident of Wasco state prison, experienced a brutal act of violence at the hands of prison police officers. His body is marked by the physical scars of this unwarranted act - a broken finger, multiple bruises, cuts from handcuffs. This, alongside the emotional trauma, has left him light-headed and dizzy.

He is serving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit. His life has been unjustly curtailed - the injustice deepened with each act of brutality inflicted upon him. Police brutality in prisons is a national issue that sees little light. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, from 2008 to 2011, 958 inmates died as a result of actions of state prison officials.

The experience of my husband offers a terrifying glimpse into a system that is shrouded in darkness and impunity. He has not only been unjustly sentenced, but now suffers further on the inside. This level of punishment – both institutional and physical – is morally reprehensible and completely unacceptable.

Our actions here are crucial. We ask for a serious and immediate investigation into the abuse at Wasco state prison. This petition seeks to ensure that in the future, no other person suffers the brutality my husband has experienced - regardless of their prison status. Alongside this, we push for a complete overhaul of the treatment of prisoners, bringing human dignity back to the forefront of our justice system. Please sign this petition to demand justice for my husband, and all other victims of police brutality within prison walls.
