The Issue
The people of Indiana are burdened by exorbitant utility rates, with bills far surpassing those of our neighboring states. In particular, NIPSCO (Northern Indiana Public Service Company) has maintained an overwhelming monopoly on energy services provided to millions of Hoosiers, leading to unchecked price hikes and a lack of affordable alternatives. These inflated costs make it increasingly difficult for individuals and families to afford basic necessities, such as heating and electricity, that are essential for everyday life.
In recent years, residents have seen an alarming rise in their utility bills, largely attributed to NIPSCO's control over our energy supply. According to a report by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), the average Indiana household spends a significant portion of its income on utilities, a figure much higher than the national average. The lack of accountability in this sector not only allows inflated prices but also stifles investments in renewable and more sustainable energy sources.
By allowing NIPSCO to maintain such dominance, we hinder our own communities from seeking and achieving energy independence and sustainability. Other states have successfully implemented measures to increase alternatives in the energy sector, resulting in improved service and lower costs for consumers. If Indiana were to follow suit, we could potentially reduce utility costs while promoting cleaner energy solutions that are more aligned with our environmental and economic goals.
We demand that Governor Mike Braun and the Indiana State Legislature to take immediate action to address this pressing issue. Break up NIPSCO's monopoly on energy in Indiana by introducing legislation that encourages accountability in the utility sector and public oversight committees. Develop policies that promote the adoption of renewable energy resources, which can offer long-term savings and energy security to residents.
As well as get private profiteering out of our public necessities.
Sign this petition to demand lower utility rates, foster energy alternatives, and pave the way for a more sustainable and affordable energy future for all Indiana residents. Together, we can demand state leaders to take the necessary steps towards addressing this problem and making this monopoly accountable to the people of Indiana. Let your voice be heard—sign this petition now! PS: Send us an email at peoplesdefensecommitteenwi@proton.meand get on our email list so we can create an alternative to legislators answering our call as they’ve sold us out time and time again. We the people must demand human basic dignity and not beg for basic human rights like warm homes and the ability to have lights on.
