Our community has suffered enough; the tragic loss of our neighbors due to accidents, especially a recent fatality, has jolted us all. The current situation on our 340th Rd from Hwy 10 east to Keystone Rd is one of constant danger. Not only do regular road users face risks, but also, the heaviness of agricultural machinery and the trailers ferrying corn to the local ethanol plant increases this risk exponentially.

The stretch of road in question does not possess a safe shoulder area, a fundamental feature for any road, rural or otherwise. A shoulder allows for safe stopping and standing, which can prevent many accidents. It also provides a safe space for heavy machinery and farm equipment to pull over, reducing the chances of vehicular collision. The reality of the countless accidents on 340th Rd, some fatal, underlines the dire necessity of a shoulder area.

We invite transportation authorities and local governing bodies to consider the urgency and importance of road widening—adding a shoulder to the 340th Rd, from Hwy 10 east to Keystone Rd. Taking action now would protect the safety of residents, passing motorists, and the many farmers whose livelihoods depend on this road.
