As a student who recently moved from New England to Maryland to attend Bowie State University, I have encountered challenges that were unfamiliar during my first semester of graduate school. These difficulties are not unique to me; many of my peers, local students of Maryland and Bowie, have voiced similar frustrations. However, these concerns are often dismissed as "HBCU problems". This is not acceptable. Our goal is to establish the precedent that HBCUs can provide adequate if not better experiences in comparison to PWIs in every aspect.

We need clearer communication regarding what graduate students should expect and the resources available for us to tailor our classes towards specialization in our respective career paths. This includes addressing concerns such as appropriate start and end times for classes, especially for graduate students who work late or have long commutes. We propose the consideration of online courses during specific times of the day to provide flexibility. Additionally, there is a pressing need for a clearer establishment of advisors and adequate ways to get in contact with them. The Counseling Psychology program, being the largest, requires particular attention, as it currently has only two administrators facilitating support (as per the last conversation with one of the admin professionals). We also demand better communication regarding Financial Aid disbursement and direct loan assistance for both undergraduate and graduate students, ensuring that financial support is transparent and accessible promptly.

Furthermore, we ask for improved support for newly relocated students who may face unique challenges adapting to a new environment.

Bowie State University has an obligation towards its student body - an obligation that extends beyond education alone. It's about providing clear information, adequate financial aid support, and ensuring that all students feel welcomed and supported regardless of their background or where they come from. Our school has an amazing history, and many revered adjudicators, and now is the time for us as a community to show what we are made of!
