The Issue

My Mum has had appalling experiences at Paphos General Hospital, not once, but twice. Each time she needed care, she found herself facing indifference and inadequate treatment. It's disheartening to learn that her experience is not isolated; countless others have shared similar stories on social media platforms, highlighting a systemic issue in how patients are treated at this facility.

Healthcare is a fundamental right for every individual, and when that care falls short, it impacts not just the patients but also their families and the wider community. Paphos General Hospital serves a significant portion of Cyprus's population, and its standards of care should reflect the level of trust placed in its hands. Unfortunately, many patients, including my own Mother, feel let down, and often helpless in the face of poor service and lack of accountability.

A report by the European Commission highlights that patient satisfaction is a critical measure for hospital effectiveness, yet anecdotal evidence suggests that Paphos General is falling behind in meeting these benchmarks. Poor communication, prolonged wait times, and dismissive attitudes from medical staff have become all too common. Personal testimonies across social media underscore the urgency for comprehensive reform.

We call upon the Ministry of Health in Cyprus to urgently investigate and address these ongoing issues at Paphos General Hospital. Implementing a transparent feedback system, increasing staff training on patient care and communication, and improving overall hospital facilities are steps that can greatly enhance the quality of service provided.

Our Story…

The first time my elderly mother went into hospital she had had a bad fall and was in a lot of pain. She has a few health issues for which she takes medication regularly. Serious ones being COPD and also has Hydrocephalus and has a shunt fitted in her brain. Due to the rush she hadn’t taken her medication with her.
Trying to discuss anything with Doctors or Nurses was a battle, trying to tell them she needs her meds and could we give them to her.
she was in there a few days without all her medication and at meal times the nurses would come round with food and put on a tray at the end of the bed. My mum was so frail she couldn’t sit herself up to get it so it went cold. The nurse says “oh aren’t you hungry?🙄

We asked if she could have something to eat and given to her properly so they brought a cheese sandwich. My mum is lactose intolerant! So she went hungry!

Obviously my mum couldn’t wait to get out. The doctors advised us on the fourth day that after some tests if they thought all was well she could go home. Later I phoned and they told me her oxygen levels were down so needed to stay longer. My mum informed me that because she hadn’t had her inhaler for COPD that would have an effect and was adamant we ask again. Bearing in mind she was hooked up to oxygen while there. The Doctor then said “oh yes actually she can go home, apologies the oxygen she was hooked up to wasn’t even turned on!!

2nd visit…

This time it was for a terrible Gastrointestinal issue.

she was incredibly poorly, couldn’t keep any food down. I don’t need to go into the details of what was happening but it wasn’t nice for her and embarrassing😔

Whenever she asked to use the bathroom they would just say “use your diaper” Believe me that gave no protection and my mum was humiliated and so upset. They just leave patients to sit in their own mess😖She was in isolation because of this bug and this time we were home in England so it was hard not to be able to help. Just left in a room on your own sitting in your own waste for hours. How can this possibly be ok?!!!
