Demand Immediate Removal of Bonnie Bee and Ashley Ogle from BigBrother House for Offensive Remarks
The Issue
As a South African deeply affected by gender-based violence (GBV), I am raising my voice against an issue that has stirred discomfort and distress among many viewers of our favorite reality show, Big Brother. Bonnie Bee and Ashley Ogle, members of the Big Brother House, have made countless intentional comments that are far from acceptable. Their words contribute to a toxic environment that can indirectly promote GBV—an issue South Africa is already combating heartily.
The widespread problem of GBV in South Africa is well-documented. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 3 women in South Africa has been physically assaulted by a partner. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for positive, respectful communication in our media spaces.
It is crucial that Big Brother and its participants set a safe, respectful, and positive atmosphere for viewers. By allowing Bonnie Bee and Ashley Ogle to remain on the show despite their offensive remarks, the producers are failing to uphold these standards. Media has a profound influence on shaping cultural norms and public behavior, and it is the producers’ responsibility to act responsibly.
We respectfully demand the immediate removal of Bonnie Bee and Ashley Ogle from the Big Brother House. Their remarks have crossed the boundary of decency, and they must face the consequences of their actions. Replacing them with Dube and Kay—housemates who were excluded due to fair judgments by the house—would benefit the Big Brother franchise, its sponsors, and its viewers. This decision would send a strong message about accountability and fairness while ensuring the show regains its credibility and promotes a positive, inclusive environment.
