Demand Immediate Funding and Preservation of Public Housing
The Issue
As a resident of public housing, I, Saundrea I. Coleman, have firsthand experience with the deplorable conditions that families in these dwellings are subjected to. In 2015, a private developer sought to replace our NYCHA campus playground with a 50-story building. For four years, my comrades and I fought against this privatization attempt - and we won. However, the fight for decent living conditions continues.
Our city, state and federal government have allowed public housing conditions to deteriorate to hazardous levels. Lack of heat or hot water; delayed repairs; non-operational elevators – these are not just inconveniences but systemic harm inflicted on us by those who should protect us.
Demolishing public housing or converting it into RAD (Rental Assistance Demonstration) or The Preservation Trust is NOT the solution we need. Such measures only serve to displace residents without addressing the root problem: lack of funding for maintenance and improvement.
We must retain Section 9 - which guarantees affordable rents for low to moderate income households - as an essential part of keeping public housing PUBLIC! We demand immediate allocation of billions into improving our dwellings!
This is not just about buildings; it's about human dignity and respect for constituents who rely on public housing as their home. It's time our government took action that reflects how they feel about us – their constituents living in PHA’s (Public Housing Authorities).
Join me in urging our government officials at all levels to #FullyFundPHA’s! Let's ensure safe, livable homes for all families residing in public housing now! Please sign this petition today!
