Demand Immediate Action to Reduce Damaging Emissions from Century Aluminum in Goose Creek!

The Issue

We, the concerned residents of Goose Creek, Summerville, North Charleston, and Moncks Corner, South Carolina, who have been affected by this urge the immediate attention and action of local authorities and environmental agencies to address the alarming levels of aluminum oxide as well as other toxic emissions like Sulfur Dioxide and other possible toxins released by Century Aluminum Mount Holly. This petition aims to protect our community's health and well-being by demanding stricter regulations and effective measures to reduce this harmful pollution.

Aluminum oxide emissions pose a significant threat to human health and the environment. These emissions contain fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that can penetrate deep into our lungs when inhaled. According to numerous scientific studies conducted by reputable institutions such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), exposure to high levels of PM2.5 can lead to respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, and even premature death.

Century Aluminum Mount Holly's operations have been identified as a major source of aluminum oxide emissions in Goose Creek. The company's smelting facility releases substantial amounts of this pollutant into our air on a daily basis. Despite claims made by Century Aluminum Mount Holly regarding their efforts to minimize environmental impact through advanced technologies, it is evident that these measures have not been sufficient in curbing their harmful emissions.

The consequences of prolonged exposure to aluminum oxide emissions are dire for our community's health. Studies have shown that individuals living near industrial facilities like Century Aluminum Mount Holly are at an increased risk of developing respiratory illnesses such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Moreover, children exposed to high levels of PM2.5 may experience stunted lung development with long-term implications on their overall well-being.

It is essential for local authorities and regulatory bodies responsible for safeguarding public health and preserving our environment take immediate action against Century Aluminum Mount Holly's excessive aluminum oxide emissions. We demand:

1) Stricter regulations: Enforce more stringent emission limits on Century Aluminum Mount Holly, ensuring they adhere to the highest environmental standards. These regulations should be regularly monitored and enforced by relevant authorities.

2) Transparent monitoring: Implement a comprehensive and transparent monitoring system that tracks and reports real-time emissions data from Century Aluminum Mount Holly's smelting facility. This will enable the community to stay informed about the levels of aluminum oxide emissions in our vicinity.

3) Investment in cleaner technologies: Encourage Century Aluminum Mount Holly to invest in state-of-the-art pollution control technologies that effectively reduce aluminum oxide emissions. Support research and development initiatives aimed at finding innovative solutions for minimizing pollution from smelting operations.

4) Community health programs: Allocate resources towards establishing community health programs that educate residents about the risks associated with aluminum oxide exposure, provide access to healthcare services, and offer support for affected individuals.

5) For Reimbursement from Century Aluminum Mount Holly, for all of the car washes we have had to pay for and to cover all damages done to our vehicles from the scratches and spotting that this DAILY continuous dust has caused on the paint of our vehicles including areas where the aluminum oxide has eaten away at areas of which the dust has settled and been baked into the paint or caused scratching when washed. As well as reimbursement for hospital bills of any individuals whom have experienced respiratory emergencies or prolonged health complications from this exposure that has been confirmed to have been going on since as early as April of 2023, if not earlier. As well as those who have developed or will develop complications later down the road due to the negligence of this company!

By signing this petition, we demand immediate action to protect our community from the harmful effects of aluminum oxide emissions released by Century Aluminum Mount Holly. Our health, well-being, and future generations depend on it. Together, let us ensure a cleaner environment for Goose Creek!

Let our voices and frustrations be heard by signing this petition for changes to be made! Feel free to write how it has affected you in the comments.

They have had continued knowledge of this going on for MONTHS and is just NOW being addressed!

We will take this and go up against Century Aluminum Mount Holly to make sure they ARE held accountable! This place needs to be SHUT DOWN in the meantime! They as well need to face a class action lawsuit!
