Through their impartial and thorough coverage of the tragic death of Mahsa Amini and the subsequent protests in Iran, they gave a voice to the people and brought their message to the global stage. Through their reporting, they exposed severe human rights abuses and the widespread suppression of free speech in their homeland.

Incredibly, despite their noble efforts and unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity, both Hamedi and Mohammadi have been unjustly sentenced to five years in prison by Iran’s revolutionary courts. This is not just an attack on two brave individuals, but a direct assault on the voices of the Iranian people and their right to truth and basic human rights.

Press freedom is a universally recognized right, and it is under serious threat in Iran. According to the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index 2021, Iran ranks 174th out of 180 countries, revealing the dire situation of press suppression in the country. The imprisonment of Hamedi and Mohammadi is a disturbing example of the regime’s ongoing efforts to silence dissent and muzzle independent journalism.
