The situation in Gaza has reached a critical point. Since this genocidal war began in October 2023, over 27,000 Palestinians people have been killed by Israel, including more than 11,500 children, with an additional 8,000 people missing and over 66,000 injured (statistics: Al Jazeera, Feb 6th 2024). 

Amidst this distressing backdrop stands Judge Julia Sebutinde, the newly appointed Vice President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), who has demonstrated unmistakable bias towards Israel, raising concerns about her objectivity in the role.

The appointment of Sebutinde is concerning, given her persistent opposition to every single ICJ emergency measure against Israel, in a case brought by South Africa concerning the ongoing genocidal war in Gaza. The measures include a crucial order compelling Israel to ensure the provision of essential aid into Gaza. Sebutinde’s position raises serious concerns and demands careful scrutiny.

Her flagrant bias undermines the fundamental principles of justice and humanitarian responsibility, particularly in her outright dismissal of ICJ-ordered measures crucial for aiding those affected by the conflict. Her appointment as Vice President is deeply troubling and prompts legitimate questions about her ability to administer justice impartially. 

In light of these alarming developments, we demand Julia Sebutinde's immediate resignation from her role and an urgent independent investigation into this matter to address the concerns surrounding her impartiality.
