As a pet owner, I am deeply concerned about the safety of animals during air travel. Stories of pets going missing or even dying during journeys are heartbreaking and far too common. It is clear that the current regulations set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) are not sufficient to ensure the safety and well-being of our beloved companions.

Every year, numerous incidents involving pets in air travel are reported worldwide. According to a U.S Department of Transportation report, 26 animals died while being transported on planes in 2016 alone (U.S Department of Transportation, 2017). This figure does not include those who were injured or went missing.

We need stricter regulations that hold airlines and airports accountable for these tragic losses. We call upon IATA to establish more rigorous safety measures for companion animals in transit. These should include better tracking systems, improved handling procedures, and stringent penalties for mishandling.
