Demand Higher Sentencing for Animal Abuser in Middleburg, Virginia

Demand Higher Sentencing for Animal Abuser in Middleburg, Virginia
The Issue
I am launching this petition on behalf of animal lovers everywhere. Close to home, at a nearby farm, at the hands of a woman from Middleburg, Virginia many animals were deprived of their right to live freely, loved, nourished, and cared for. The same woman has also been guilty of profound neglect and abuse of over 20 animals on her farm. The state of Virginia classified this case as a civil case, while the acts of this Middleburg Woman are clearly criminal. Of these, 5 dogs were found lifeless, and others knocking on deaths door due to her direct actions, neglect, and upmost disregard of care. Many other animals were found in grave condition.
Despite these heinous actions, she was only marked with a misdemeanor sticker. This does not fit the enormity of the crime committed against these innocent animals, nor does it provide them with the justice they truly deserve. The current law in Virginia trivially classifies such heartrending animal cruelty as a mere misdemeanor, which we wholeheartedly believe fails to reflect the overall damage done to these animals.
A study conducted by National Link Coalition shows that individuals committing animal abuse are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people. If the current law is not revised to properly prosecute these offenders, we fail not only these animals but also potentially endanger our community.
We call upon the Loudon County General District Courts, and the Virginia State Legislature to acknowledge the damage done in this particular civil/criminal case and to raise the charges of severe animal abuse from a misdemeanor to a felony. It's time we treat these crimes against innocent beings with the gravity they deserve. Change starts now with this case, and this criminal from Middleburg Virginia.
