Demand Hate Crime Charges and Equal Justice for Susan Glass-Smith
The Issue
A Black Detroit woman was surrounded by a mob of up to 80 Arab men yelling racist slurs, had her purse stolen and was threatened with a spiked bat. But prosecutors are treating it like a minor traffic case and protecting the other driver’s identity.
The Attack
Susan and her lawyers say that on the night of September 12, 2026, an 18-year-old Arab driver ran a red light in the Warrendale neighborhood and rear-ended Susan’s car. A large crowd of Arab men gathered after she pulled over. Some yelled: “This is our hood, get out of here, n-----.” The men opened Susan’s doors, stole her belongings, hid the other driver, took off the tags of the car that hit Susan and pushed the damaged car out of sight. One man swung a spiked bat at a man who was filming and at Susan. When the two officers arrived, they refused to seize the visible bat or fingerprint Susan’s car without a warrant.
A Double Standard
• The other driver’s name has not been released – even though she was charged with two traffic misdemeanors, arraigned in court and released on a $10,000 personal bond
• No hate crime charges filed
• No one charged for the threats, Susan’s stolen purse, the bat incident, or the cover-up
• No search warrants
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison: We Demand Action
• Release the identity of the other driver—exactly the way you would if she was Black
• Conduct a real investigation into the mob, threats, theft, spiked bat, and cover-up
• Stop treating a racial attack on a Black woman as a minor traffic case
Sign if you believe Susan Glass-Smith deserves the same justice under the law as anyone else.
