As a victim of an intense, traumatizing sexual crime, I found myself placed in a system that holds the offender's rights over the victim's cries for justice. My assailant was indicted on sexual battery charges, despite the brutality of his actions, which involved an hour of physical restraint and strangulation. This egregious discrepancy in the sentence passed highlights an urgent need for reform. I urge potential signees to join this call for change as a stand against clemency for these monstrous acts. The system must enact harsher sentencing for offenders of any form of sexual crime, not only as a tougher form of punishment, but also as a deterrent against repeat offenses. Judges should be stricter and show no leniency, even if the offender is committing the crime for the first time. We, as a society, must advocate for better means of communication with law enforcement to prevent these criminals from returning to the streets. We must also demand for a means that allows victims to be better heard and obtain the justice they deserve, as opposed to facing the humiliating reality of a lenient prosecution equating to a slap on the face for victims. In Europe alone, one-fifth of women have suffered from physical and/or sexual violence from a partner since the age of 15 (European Institute for Gender Equality, 2021). This statistic paints a grim picture of the reality many individuals face, highlighting the urgent need for action. In light of the pain and injustice suffered by countless victims, we must insist on stronger laws to protect the innocent.
