We, the undersigned, call on Google Maps to reverse its localized labeling policy that replaced "Gulf of Mexico" with "Gulf of America" and "Lake Ontario" with "Lake America" for U.S.-based users.  

While Google cites alignment with updates to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), multinational geographical features shared across international borders belong to a shared global heritage. Unilaterally altering centuries-old, globally recognized geographical designations on digital maps to reflect single-nation administrative orders creates geographic confusion and undermines map accuracy for millions of everyday users.  

"Lake Ontario"—derived from the Indigenous Wendat language—and the "Gulf of Mexico" carry long-standing historical, cultural, and scientific consensus.  

We urge Google to prioritize cartographic integrity over political directives and restore the primary, rightful geographic names "Lake Ontario" and "Gulf of Mexico" across all global regions on Google Maps.
