Demand Full Transparency: Release the Cook Islands–China Agreement to the Public
The issue
We, the undersigned, call on Prime Minister Mark Brown and the Cook Islands Government to immediately release all documents, agreements, and communications relating to any deals signed with the People’s Republic of China. We demand full transparency and public scrutiny of these decisions, which may have long-term consequences for the people, land, and sovereignty of the Cook Islands.
Why This Matters:
The Cook Islands is not just a strategic location in the Pacific—it is home. Any agreement that involves foreign influence, investment, or control over our resources, infrastructure, or decision-making must be brought to the people before it is agreed upon—not after.
We are concerned about:
Potential military, economic, or political leverage from foreign powers
Lack of consultation with local communities and traditional leaders
Environmental and cultural impacts of secretive development plans
The precedent this sets for bypassing public engagement in the future
Cook Islanders, both at home and abroad, deserve to know what is being done in their name.
What We Are Asking For:
We respectfully demand the following:
A full public release of all documents, memoranda, agreements, and communications relating to any deals made between the Cook Islands Government and the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
A clear explanation of the terms, goals, and implications of these deals.
An independent review by Cook Islands civil society groups and traditional leaders before any implementation.
Who This Affects:
The people of the Cook Islands
Our children and future generations
Pacific neighbours concerned with regional autonomy and balance
Indigenous communities who value transparency, sovereignty, and protection of their land
Let Our Voice Be Heard:
We call on all Cook Islanders, allies, and concerned Pacific citizens to sign and share this petition. Transparency is not optional—it is the foundation of democracy.
