The Issue

In less than two weeks, Calvert County, Maryland filed animal cruelty charges against five different residents, seventeen counts in all, including one felony aggravated cruelty charge. Court records describe a dog named Gideon allegedly grabbed by the neck, shaken, and thrown down a flight of stairs. They describe four eight-week-old puppies left outside with less than half an inch of dirty water on a hot day. And they describe Bayley, an eighteen-year-old disabled dog, allegedly left with open wounds, infection, and live maggots under matted fur until she was finally brought in and euthanized.

These aren't isolated incidents. They are five separate cases, filed weeks apart, all surfacing from the same county in the same summer. That pattern deserves more than routine handling. It deserves prosecutors who pursue every count to the fullest extent the law allows, judges who treat animal suffering as the serious harm it is, and a county government willing to ask whether Calvert County Animal Control has the staffing and authority it needs to catch the next case before an animal like Bayley suffers for weeks.

Every defendant is entitled to due process, and these charges are allegations that still have to be proven in court. But the facts already on record are serious enough that the county's response can't be an afterthought. Calvert County's leaders should commit publicly to full prosecution of these cases and to reviewing whether animal control has what it needs to prevent the next one.

Sign this petition to demand that Calvert County follow through, for Gideon, for Bayley, and for every animal whose safety depends on how seriously this county treats these charges.
