A kitten is dead, and the woman accused of killing it is now facing a judge in Jefferson County, Texas. Beaumont police say Heather Broussard was walking down Bigner Road holding a kitten when an officer, responding to a welfare check, watched her tighten her grip around its neck until it could no longer breathe. By the time Animal Control arrived, the kitten's neck was broken beyond saving, and officers had no choice but to end its suffering.

Broussard now faces a third-degree felony charge for cruelty to a non-livestock animal, along with misdemeanor charges for evading arrest and resisting officers who tried to stop her. Felony charges like this are too often reduced to fines or probation once a case reaches the courtroom, especially when the victim can't speak for itself. That should not happen here.

We're calling on the Jefferson County Criminal District Attorney's Office to pursue this felony animal cruelty charge to its fullest extent under Texas law, without plea deals that erase accountability for what happened to this kitten. Animals cannot testify, cannot advocate for themselves, and depend entirely on the people who are supposed to protect them, including the courts. When cruelty this severe is documented by a police officer as it happened, the justice system has a responsibility to follow through.
