A Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin secretly bankrolled a large share of Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding this year, and Congress deserves real answers.

ProPublica's reporting revealed that Umar Kremlev, who leads a boxing federation backed by the Russian state energy company Gazprom, quietly picked up several hundred thousand dollars in wedding-related costs, including paying to secure a private Bahamas island for part of the celebration. Kremlev attended the event with a group of fellow Russians, alongside guests like Jared Kushner and other Trump family members.

Rep. Robert Garcia, the House Oversight Committee's top Democrat, has opened a formal inquiry into the arrangement. In his letter to Trump Jr., Garcia wrote that "the secretive, close relationship between the son of a sitting U.S. President and a member of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's inner circle raises serious national security and public corruption concerns."

This isn't a partisan issue. Whenever a foreign national tied to an adversarial government quietly funds a lavish gift for a sitting president's family, the public has a right to know what was expected in return, if anything. Congress should get full access to the financial records and communications it has requested, and any wrongdoing uncovered should be treated with the same seriousness as any other case of undisclosed foreign influence.
