The Issue

Southaven, Mississippi, accepted $3.23 million for its police department from two organizations tied to Elon Musk. The money arrived between December and February, the same stretch of time city leaders were working out the terms of a $20 billion SpaceXAI data center. Residents deserve to know exactly what was discussed, what was signed and what the money bought.

A SpaceXAI subsidiary, MZX Tech LLC, gave $1.38 million. A city clerk signed for that gift one day after the Board of Aldermen approved an agreement with SpaceXAI connected to the data center. The Musk Foundation added $1.85 million, and its grant agreement listed Flock license plate cameras and an autonomous drone system as planned purchases. The department has since spent $250,000 on a Flock drone system.

Mayor Darren Musselwhite says the gifts are unrelated to the deal. But families near the SpaceXAI gas plant, which has operated in Southaven since August 2025, have raised noise and pollution concerns for more than a year, and residents have filed at least two lawsuits. When a company with major business before the city sends millions to the police, the public deserves a full look at the paperwork and a real say in how surveillance tools are used on local streets.

Mayor Musselwhite and the Southaven Board of Aldermen should release every donation agreement, communication and spending record linked to SpaceXAI and the Musk Foundation. They should hold a public hearing on how the donated Flock cameras and drones will be used, with clear written rules on data storage and privacy. And they should adopt an ethics policy that stops city departments from accepting gifts from companies with deals pending before the city.

Sign the petition to demand full transparency in Southaven before more corporate money shapes how the city is policed.
