Demand full disclosure of food ingredients
Demand full disclosure of food ingredients
The Issue
For several years, I have grappled with an anxiety-inducing challenge that should not exist in modern society—the lack of transparency in food labeling. As someone living with uncommon allergies, my relationship with food has become fraught with constant fear and uncertainty. Simple meals have turned into potential hazards, and my diet is severely restricted, leaving me underweight and nutritionally vulnerable. This is not just my story; countless others face similar struggles each day.
The current laws mandate labeling of only the major allergens, neglecting the needs of individuals with non-conventional allergies to specific fruits, seed derivatives, or food dyes. Companies often conceal ingredients under sweeping terms like 'natural flavors,' 'spices,' or 'colors,' which exacerbates the problem. This lack of clarity forces many of us to place irrational and unnecessary limitations on our diets.
According to a 2021 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies impact approximately 32 million Americans, and while the most common allergens are well-documented, millions more are affected by less typical allergens. This means that an increasing number of consumers are left without the necessary tools to manage their allergies effectively, turning what should be a simple act of purchasing food into a gamble with their health.
We petition the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take immediate action by requiring full disclosure of all sub-ingredients in food products. This should be implemented through either complete ingredient labeling or an accessible, user-friendly searchable database. Doing so would empower consumers, reduce the anxiety surrounding dietary limitations, and ultimately protect everyone, including those with rare allergies.
Transparent food labeling is not just a matter of convenience—it is an essential step in safeguarding consumer health. It's time for the FDA to recognize the diverse array of allergies affecting millions and the genuine impact they have on everyday life.
Please join us in our fight for comprehensive ingredient transparency. Sign the petition to help us bring about this necessary change, ensuring everyone can eat without fear and with full confidence in what they consume.
