Last week, I witnessed the harsh reality of election malpractice in Zambia. It was a scene of chaos and fear orchestrated by those in power, determined to cling to their positions at any cost. Brave polling agents faced threats, numbers were altered, and honest presiding officers were taken out of the process. It was a betrayal of trust, a stark reminder that democracy is under siege in our beloved nation.

In recent elections, defence personnel were seen manipulating votes in favor of the sitting president, a candidate whom the majority of Zambians no longer support. Instead of protecting the people, these forces have prioritized the interests of those who wish to remain in power by any means necessary. Innocent citizens, merely exercising their democratic right and voicing dissent, have faced unjust arrest and imprisonment.

This systemic corruption and coercion have deprived us of our voices, our power, and most importantly, our future. Despite these efforts, we remain unyielding in our demand for justice and transparency. It’s crucial that we conduct free and fair elections that genuinely reflect the will of the Zambian people.

There is an urgent need for international and local oversight in the election process to ensure credibility. Implementation of stringent electoral laws and penalties for those found guilty of tampering is essential. We need to protect our polling stations and agents from intimidation and intervene promptly where discrepancies arise.
