Hi everyone,

We are continuing to push hard for meaningful change on Chalkers Lane.

In recent weeks, we have put up our own 30mph reminder signs and added 30mph stickers to our bins to encourage drivers to slow down. While these are not official measures, they are a visible sign that residents are deeply concerned about safety.

We are also:

  • Speaking with local landowners to establish land ownership along the lane so we can explore practical options for installing a footpath.
  • Engaging with council officers and local political representatives.
  • Reaching out to campaigners who can help us move this issue forward.

We are often met with the response that there is already a path from Hurstpierpoint College, but this does not solve the issue for residents, as we still have to walk along Chalkers Lane to reach it! See above image.

To reiterate the seriousness of the situation:
Through recent information gathering, we have confirmed that two children have been hit by cars on Chalkers Lane, one of these incidents was a hit and run. At least one cyclist has been knocked off their bike. Many residents report frightening near-misses on a regular basis. Cars crash into verges and gardens multiple times a year on Chalkers lane, and have to be physically removed.

This is not hypothetical. It is not exaggerated. It is happening.

The level of traffic has increased significantly in recent years, following rapid growth of Hurst college and new housing in the surrounding area, and the current layout of the lane is no longer safe for pedestrians, cyclists, or residents. Ignoring this will not make it safer. Without intervention, there will inevitably be a serious tragedy.

Please continue sharing this petition and raising awareness. If you have contacts in local media, with councillors, or anyone who can help bring wider attention to this issue, please do reach out.

Thank you for your continued support, together we can push for the changes needed to make Chalkers Lane safe!
