Demand for member input in local and board endorsements
The Issue
PLEASE only sign this petition if you are a(n) IBEW 1245 member of Modesto Irrigation District.
As an active and committed union members, we are deeply frustrated with the lack of opportunity given to us in influencing MID board endorsements, something that greatly impacts our local campaign efforts. Recently, we were led to believe that our votes—our voices—would count in deciding who we endorse as Union Members. Yet, we found out that the crucial decision was already predetermined without genuine input from the members it directly affects.
Union members have always been part of a democratic process, where every individual's opinion should be valued and considered vital in the decision-making process. We rely on these endorsements to reflect our collective values and priorities. It is the very essence of our participation that makes our endorsement meaningful both to the employees we represent and the campaigns we support.
To ensure democracy within our organization, we demand a transparent process where member votes are solicited, counted, and heavily weighted in determining endorsements for the MID board. Our recommendation as the broader membership should substantially influence endorsement decisions, aligning with the principles of fair representation and collective bargaining.
Our proposal is simple: implement a mechanism for direct voting on endorsements, providing us with the genuine opportunity to express our preferences. This process should be characterized by transparency and accountability, where members can vote freely, aware of how their votes contribute to the final decision.
According to numerous studies, organizations that maintain democratic processes within have stronger member engagement, satisfaction, and overall success. Members feel more represented and are therefore more likely to actively participate in campaigns and initiatives.
We cannot stress enough how important it is for us that our choices matter—that our union genuinely represents us. We ask the IBEW Union Executive Board to implement necessary reforms to include member votes in decisions concerning board endorsements. We are not merely passive observers; we are the backbone of our union, and our voices deserve to be heard.
Join us in demanding change and ensuring that our votes truly have the power to shape outcomes. Sign this petition to make our voices loud and clear to the decision-makers, and insist on a meaningful democratic process that reflects our diverse perspectives and collective strength.
