This petition is in no way in attack on the Lilydale Post office, it is purely about accessibility issues and the lack of a postal service in Lilydale. We believe Lilydale needs a post office along with home delivery. 

Accessibility Issues
The absence of disability-friendly infrastructure hinders residents from collecting mail. There is no ramp, only stairs with no rail into the post office.

Examples of inconvenience due to accessibility restraints:

Little old Betty in her 80s, who can only walk short flat distances, has to struggle up the steps and hopefully not fall with the absence of a handrail.
Parents cannot easily push the pram into the shop.
Sonia, who is in a wheelchair, cannot enter at all.
As per the Australian Network on Disability, one in five Australians has some form of disability. Considering this statistic, the lack of accessible structures thus deprives a significant population of this basic service. By allowing home delivery, Australia Post can ensure that all residents, irrespective of their mobility constraints, have access to their mail.

Operating Hours Issues
Australia Post's policy regarding postal service within the local Lilydale area has brought inconvenience and accessibility issues to its residents. Currently, the post office only operates during business hours Monday – Friday, which compels individuals to sacrifice their work hours for collecting their posts. Given that most residents work in Launceston, 20 minutes away, they need to take time off work to make it back before the post office shuts its doors. The predicament worsens for those who are unable to visit the post office during work hours and are consequently deprived of their mail for weeks.

Call to Action
