On behalf of two deeply affected families and countless other victims, we launch this plea for reform. My sister and brother-in-law were tragically killed by a street racer, who was a mere 73 days away from adulthood. He was not deprived of regular visits in juvie with his parents, and was released just 804 days after the crime; he did not even start juvenile rehabilitation until after sentencing. Their 7-year-old daughters survived the near-death collision, left them extremely traumatized, and were overlooked by the juvenile Judge during their life-altering tragedy that they will face for the rest of their lives.

Our justice system failed to provide a fair and just trial in the aftermath of this horrific incident. Moreover, despite being direct victims of a heinous crime, the children of my sister were not given any emotional or financial support from our tax dollars. The street racer, however, does get this type of support and continues to do so while back home with his parents in the same environment that fostered his reckless choices.

We are urging lawmakers to revise our legal system and ensure fair and appropriate court process, especially in cases involving street racers, intentionally using their car as a weapon. Street racing has become far too prevalent and dangerous, just like school shootings. Furthermore, it is crucial to provide ample resources and funding for victims. This should not be a privilege, but a basic right in a country governed by justice and democracy.

Sadly, research states that less than 10% of crime victims receive direct assistance such as counseling, emergency shelter, and financial aid (source: U.S Bureau of Justice Statistics). This statistic is horrifying and indicates an urgent need for reform in our justice system and victim support services.

Please add your voice to this vital cause by signing the petition. Together, we can bring about a change that ensures fair trials and provides adequate resources for all crime victims.
