Demand for EBU Leadership Investigation, regarding the Eurovision Song Contest 2024

The Issue

In light of recent events leading up to the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, we demand an immediate investigation into the actions and practices of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) under the leadership of Martin Österdahl, executive supervisor, and the Eurovision Song Contest reference group. We believe that the leadership appointed has been negligent in various situations and scenarios leading up to — but not limited to — the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, including the admission of a broadcaster whose government is currently being investigated for ´war crimes´ and ´crimes against humanity´ by the International Criminal Court (Israel), failure to protect participant’s physical and mental health, lack of clarity regarding the investigation of the Dutch participant, continuous restrictions against fan-based media and accreditations, etc.

We condemn the reactions and steps taken by the EBU concerning these events and believe that an external investigation into the EBU’s practices and decision-making will provide further clarity, transparency, and understanding to the general public, press, and participants to help combat disrepute to the Eurovision Song Contest itself as well as the EBU. Furthermore, we demand that Martin Österdahl resign, effective immediately. It has become glaringly apparent that the contest's reputation has been irrevocably damaged due to its current leadership, and — we believe — the contest cannot and will not continue in its present state.

We thank you for your consideration and look forward to hearing more regarding an adjustment in leadership and the opening of an external investigation.
