Demand FL Legislature to Enforce Online Behavioural Regulations in Response to Ashley Trevino's Case
The Issue
Online harassment and abusive behavior poses serious risks to the mental health and well-being of victims. The appalling case of Ashley Trevino in Florida starkly highlights the need for robust regulation of online behavior. Ashley was a victim of persistent online bullying which has left a lasting impact on her life. Despite such egregious instances, Florida currently lacks deliberate legislative acts to regulate harmful online behavior, leaving our citizens vulnerable to cyberbullying. The US Department of Health and Human Services reports that approximately 20% of students aged 12 to 18 have experienced cyberbullying (National Center for Education Statistics, 2019). Cyberbullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims (Yale University, 2010). We can no longer ignore this crisis. It is time for the Florida Legislature to take urgent action and establish regulatory mechanisms to deter and punish online misconduct in order to protect our citizens. Please stand with us and sign the petition to show your support for this crucial cause.
